Big Chief Conference / Darryl Montana
Immerse yourself in the vibrant world of New Orleans' Black Masking traditions with this unique workshop led by Parisian choreographer Smaïl Kanouté and local trumpet legend James Andrews.Through movement, rhythm and storytelling, this immersive session invites participants to discover the deep roots of Black Masking Indian culture - where music, dance and ceremonial crafts intertwine in a spirit of celebration and resistance.
Smaïl, who has been honored by Big Chief Darryl Montana and awarded a Black Masking costume, brings a powerful choreographic vision informed by his travels and intimate connection to the identity of the African diaspora. James, nicknamed the "Satchmo of the Ghetto", stirs the soul of New Orleans with his trumpet, groove and stories from the heart of Tremé.
Whether you're a dancer, musician, artist or simply curious, this workshop offers you a rare opportunity to feel the pulse of New Orleans culture and participate in a living tradition that continues to inspire across generations and borders.
Workshop open to all levels. Come ready to move, listen, feel and connect.
