Thérèse Laperche in the Orléans Collection

The 2020 exhibition 𝘋𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘦. 𝘜𝘯 𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘶𝘹 𝘵𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘥𝘦 𝘭’𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘪𝘳𝘦 has shed light on other members of this family originally from Orléans, notably the artist’s mother, Thérèse Laperche (1743–1814). It was under the patronage of the collector Aignan Thomas Desfriches that she trained with Perronneau while he was staying in Orléans between 1763 and 1765. Her talents as a portraitist earned her a local clientele, which she cultivated with the ambition of establishing herself as an artist. This portrait of a man, dated around 1790—possibly of a member of the Loynes d’Autroche de Morett family (1728–1815)—was acquired through preemptive purchase at a public auction in 2025. It further solidifies Thérèse Laperche’s place within the Orléans art collection while expanding our understanding of this artist. Like her teacher Perronneau, she demonstrates a heightened attention to likeness and the details of the subject’s hair in her portraits of men. Discover it now on the museum tour!
