Eudoxe Marcille

Eudoxe Marcille was appointed director of the Orléans museums until his death in 1890. Son of the great Orléans-born collector François Marcille, he breathed new life into the museum with a new presentation of works and a significant enrichment of the collections. Up until then, the museum had focused primarily on ancient art, but it now opened its doors to modern and contemporary painting, and in particular to the Romantic generation, for which Marcille intended to make Orléans the place of reference. Over the next twenty years, almost 3,000 works were donated by collectors, artists or their widows.
