A restored work by Bordier du Bignon

Restoring collections is one of the most essential tasks of a museum, ensuring that works are properly preserved and perfectly legible, but also sometimes saving them! The monumental 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘥’𝘏𝘪𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘺𝘵𝘦 exhibited at the Salon of 1814 by Jacques-Charles Bordier du Bignon (1774-1846) was in storage, in a very precarious state after being damaged by water during the20th century. The canvas was unrolled and restored between 2022 and 2024 by the Arcanes workshop, supervised by Sébastien David, and has just been added to the hall of the Museum of Fine Arts, where it can be seen for the first time since it entered the collections! It was donated by the artist's son in 1846, in homage to his father who had a house in Neuville-aux-Bois, near Orléans, and is the counterpart to Hippolyte et les monstres (Hippolyte and the Monsters) kept at the Dijon library.
